FAIR geodetic services: the ROB contribution to European e-infrastructures

Abstract: GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems), such as the GPS and Galileo, are satellite-based systems used for positioning, navigation, and timing. The Belgian and European GNSS landscape is built upon extensive, distributed networks of thousands of permanently operating ground stations. These stations continuously record signals transmitted by GNSS satellites and generate massive volumes of high-precision geodetic data. Managing the GNSS data lifecycle, from raw observation to derived scientific products (reference frames, station positions and velocities, tropospheric parameters for weather & climate, ionospheric maps...), requires a robust, interoperable e-infrastructure aligned with FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles. This poster highlights the open services developed by the GNSS team of the Royal Observatory of Belgium (ROB) and designed to support curated (meta)data and data product access, processing, and dissemination, strengthening the integration of GNSS data within the broader European geodetic and geoscientific infrastructure such as EUREF (the sub-commission for the European reference frame within the International association of Geodesy), and the European Plate Observing System (EPOS). ROB’s GNSS open services include: Open Data Portal: A FAIR-compliant gateway (gnss.be/opendataportal) providing open access to daily RINEX observations and their curated and standardized metadata for Belgian and EUREF stations, ensuring data discoverability and accessibility. M3G Metadata Management System: A scalable architecture (gnss-metadata.eu) that harmonizes metadata across heterogeneous GNSS networks, including EPN and EPOS. This system ensures semantic interoperability and supports the dynamic discovery of station capabilities and data availability. EPOS-GNSS Data Quality Monitoring Service: A service (gnssquality-epos.oma.be) providing continuous monitoring of data availability and quality metrics within EPOS. This service helps station operators maintain high standards and allows researchers to assess data reliability before ingestion. High-Precision Product Generation: Access to combined EUREF reference frame solutions (epncb.oma.be), demonstrating the downstream application of the curated data pipeline for geodynamic studies and precise positioning. The poster will illustrate how these services collectively support diverse scientific domains (from tectonic plate monitoring to atmospheric studies) and address critical challenges in scientific e-infrastructure: standardizing metadata schemas (GNSS-DCAT-AP), automating quality assurance at scale, and facilitating seamless data sharing. In addition, by linking the ROB-EUREF data node directly to the EPOS Data Portal, we showcase a successful model of national infrastructure contributing to a pan-European research environment.
